Inspiration Photos

My current jewelry and dyeing projects are all based on photos that Tim and I have taken over the last few years. The pictures were all taken in Washington State on hikes or roadtrips, and represent some of the overwhelming natural beauty around us.

What I’ve done is selected fifteen photos from our files to serve as an initial collection to work from. I can’t claim ownership of this idea–I’ve seen it on numerous crafting websites in the past, most notably Knitting on Impulse, who bases her yarn dyeing on the beautiful photos she takes around her home in Whistler, BC. I pixelized each photo to draw the basic colors from it, then translated those colors into stones, dye, or glass palettes to use in my designs. Here’s an example:
Thistle
This picture of a blooming thistle was taken along the Monte Cristo Trail off the Mountain Loop Highway in the northern Cascades. Pixelized, the picture yielded various purples and greens.
Thistlepx
Translated into jewelry, the picture became this necklace.

Each member of a series will draw more or less exactly from its parent photo, and every item should coordinate with all the other members of its series. I look forward to working through this project, and can’t wait to see some of the creative combinations it generates!
